Technology is everywhere — from job applications to virtual doctor visits — yet millions of people still lack the digital skills necessary to navigate today’s fast-paced world. This Feb. 13, we observe Digital Learning Day, a moment to celebrate how technology transforms education and workplaces while also acknowledging the persistent digital divide. At Goodwill Central Coast, we are dedicated to ensuring that everyone — regardless of background — has the digital skills they need to succeed.
The importance of Digital Learning Day
Launched in 2012 by the Alliance for Excellent Education, Digital Learning Day was created to highlight the potential of technology to revolutionize education and improve learning outcomes. More than just about using new gadgets, the initiative focuses on equitable access to technology and digital resources, ensuring that no one is left behind.
While technology has made learning more engaging and accessible, the reality is that many people still lack basic digital literacy, preventing them from applying for jobs, accessing healthcare, and even connecting with loved ones. That’s why Goodwill Central Coast is stepping up to bridge this gap through our Digital Literacy Program.
How GCC helps bridge the gap
At Goodwill Central Coast, we recognize that digital literacy is no longer optional — it’s essential. Our Digital Literacy Program provides hands-on training, mentorship, and access to digital tools, empowering individuals to confidently navigate today’s tech-driven world.
For many, a lack of digital skills is a major barrier to employment and education. Through our program, we teach:
- Basic computer skills: Navigating a computer, using email, and understanding internet safety.
- Job application essentials: Creating resumes, applying for jobs online, and using professional networking tools.
- Workplace software proficiency: Training in Microsoft Office, video conferencing platforms, and secure data management to help individuals stay competitive in today’s job market.
Certifications that open doors
Participants in our program have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications through CertiPort and Northstar, which boost resumes and increase job prospects. These credentials show employers that individuals have the digital skills needed to excel in the workplace.
Digital literacy for everyday life
Beyond employment, digital literacy has become a necessity for day-to-day life. Many essential services — including telehealth, government programs, and education — are now online. For those unfamiliar with technology, even scheduling a doctor’s appointment or attending a virtual parent-teacher conference can feel overwhelming. Our program helps individuals gain confidence in using technology, making life easier and more connected.
Breaking barriers to digital confidence
For many people, asking for help with technology can feel intimidating. The rapid shift to a digital world — especially following the pandemic — has left many behind, creating frustration and anxiety. Our Digital Literacy Program provides a judgment-free environment where individuals of all skill levels can learn at their own pace and gain the confidence needed to thrive in an increasingly digital society.
Building a more connected community
At Goodwill Central Coast, our mission is to enhance lives through learning and employment, and digital literacy is a key part of that vision. By investing in digital education, we’re not only transforming individual lives but also strengthening our community — ensuring that no one is excluded from opportunities simply because they lack digital skills.
The power of digital literacy
At its core, digital literacy is the ability to use digital devices, the internet, and social media to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information. It builds on traditional literacy skills to address computer and digital device competency, and includes the following:
- Information literacy: The ability to find, evaluate, and use digital information critically
- Media literacy: The ability to understand, interpret, and critically evaluate digital media
- Communication and collaboration: The ability to use digital communication tools and collaborate effectively in digital environments
- Cybersecurity awareness: The ability to recognize potential cyber threats
- Office software: The ability to use office software such as word processors, email, and presentation software
- Creating and editing: The ability to create and edit images, audio, and video
- Using the internet: The ability to use the internet confidently on a mobile phone, tablet, laptop, or PC
- Communicating online: The ability to communicate online using email, social media, or other tools like Zoom and Teams
- Searching for information: The ability to search for reliable information online
